DANIEL BARNES

Managing Partner & CEO of Barnes, Catmur & Friends

Daniel has been in advertising for more than 30 years, working as creative at both independent and multinational agencies before starting his own agency in 1996. He then joined forces in 2008 with Paul Catmur to form Barnes, Catmur & Friends. He is on his second term on the Executive Board of CAANZ, and has also served on the Advertising Standards Authority.

Barnes Catmur is New Zealand’s #1 Most Effective Independent Agency, and according to EFFIES global ranking is also #1 in Asia-Pacific and #3 Worldwide.
Barnes Catmur is also Australasian Independent Agency of the Year (Campaign Asia) and New Zealand Agency of the Year (Fairfax/Admedia).

PHILIP ANDREW

Former Executive Creative Director at Clemenger BBDO Wellington

Philip holds a Diploma in Visual Communication Design and Advertising. He has over 30 years experience in the advertising industry working at HKM, DDB and Saatchi & Saatchi before joining the Clemenger Group of Companies.

Philip was Clemenger BBDO Wellington Creative Director and Chief Executive 2005 through 2010 and today is the agency’s Executive Creative Director. His work has been recognised at the world’s best advertising forums including One Show, D&AD, Effies and the prestigious Cannes Lion Awards.

Philip has been a Jury member at Cannes Lions, D&AD, New York Festival, Australian Award and New Zealand’s local shows. He is a Director of Clemenger BBDO and a Board member of The Royal New Zealand Ballet.

INTERNATIONAL JUDGES

JEREMY CRAIGEN

Global ECD for Volkswagen, DDB London

Jeremy started his career at the now defunct Ted Bates in 1984, where he produced work of little merit. A few years later, Bates was merged in to Dorlands (now defunct) where he managed to get a couple of decent things out. In 1990 he somehow managed to get in to the hallowed offices of BMP DDB, just across the road. During those years he worked on numerous accounts including VW, Sony and American Airlines.

In the mid 90’s he was made a Creative Director on VW and helped shape the “Surprisingly Ordinary Prices” campaign into the most awarded campaign of the year and saw DDB as the most awarded agency of the year in the Gunn Reports inaugural year.

In 2003 he became Executive Creative Director of DDB/UK and has twice seen the agency become the most awarded Agency in the world in the Gunn Report. In 2012 he has decided to take on the global role of ECD on his beloved VW account.

And in 2012 he was awarded The Chairman’s award at the British arrows for an outstanding contribution to film and television advertising.

MATTY BURTON

Creative Partner of Special Group Sydney

Matty Burton is one of the founding creative partners of the recently opened Special Group in Australia, alongside his long-term creative partner Dave Bowman.

Special Group are a creatively led independent design and advertising agency founded in New Zealand. The Australian office already boasts clients including Red Bull, Paspaley Pearls, Guzman Y Gomez, Adopt Change, Marcs and Saba.

Previously Matty was Executive Creative Director at Whybin\TBWA Sydney. Since joining the agency rose to be the number 1 ranked agency in Australia and the number 9 ranked in the world, taking out over 19 Agency Of The Year titles across multiple publications as well as various campaign of the year, effectiveness agency of the year, digital campaign of the year and PR campaign of the year accolades for it’s creative output.

Creatively, Matty has been most notably awarded with 2 x Cannes Titanium Lions, the Cannes Direct Grand Prix, a Digital EMMY as well as a Black Pencil at D&AD. Although sailing high above all of these are two grand Axis awards, which he shines vigorously every second day.

Previous to Special Group and Whybin\TBWA Matty has worked at Droga5 Sydney, Droga5 New York, Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand and The Glue Society, Sydney.

MARK HARRICKS

ECD of VPP Sydney

Mark Harricks is one of the most awarded creatives in Australia. His career has seen him work in some of the most well known creative agencies in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.  His work has been recognised at Cannes including a coveted Titanium Integrated Lion and four Gold Lions, at D&AD, Spikes, One Show, The Clios and AWARD.

He has also been invited to judge at Cannes, One Show, The Clios and AWARD. Mark is the current Chairman of the Australasian Writers and Art Directors (AWARD) Council. He was involved in the repositioning and redesign of the AWARD brand and in the formation of the national peak advertising body “The Communications Council”.

He also resides on the National Board of the Communications Council. His love of unconventional thinking and his receding hairline has earned him the nickname “The Mad Professor”.

AXIS JURY PRESIDENTS

DAMON STAPLETON/ Chief Creative Officer, DDB Group NZ

Damon is Chief Creative Officer of DDB New Zealand. He was formerly Executive Creative Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Australia and TBWA Hunt Lascaris in South Africa, which was voted agency of the decade in 2010. He has worked on global brands such as BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Heineken, Visa, Cadbury and the World Cup 2010 campaign for Adidas.

Damon has collected awards at some of the most prestigious international advertising festival shows, receiving multiple D&AD Pencils – including a Black Pencil. He’s won 29 Cannes Lions, including a Grand Prix and eight Gold Lions, two Grand Clio, 10 One Show pencils including eight Gold Pencils, and the first ever ADC Black Cube awarded.

He is most known for his “Trillion Dollar” bill campaign for The Zimbabwean, which in 2010 which won over 60 international awards. It is now in the permanent collection in the British Museum.

He has also been recognized as one of the top 10 Executive Creative Directors in the world by both Creativity Magazine and the Big Won Report. In 2011, Finance Week awarded him Achiever of Year in South Africa. He’s had a variety of short stories published as well as articles for various magazines and writes a blog called damonsbrain.com. It is stuff he thinks about instead of world domination.

NICK WORTHINGTON/ Executive Creative Director, ColensoBBDO

Nick studied Graphic Design in the early 80’s at St Martin’s School of Art in London. He joined BBH in London in 1986 and under the watchful eye of Sir John Hegarty produced many award winning campaigns including Levis Creek and Drugstore. After 10 years at BBH Nick joined AMV BBDO under David Abbott, and over the next 7 years created award winning work for Road Safety, Dulux, Wrangler.

In 2003 Nick joined Dave Droga on the Publicis worldwide creative board and moved to New Zealand, first as ECD at Publicis Mojo and later as ECD at Colenso BBDO in Auckland. Nick is now Creative Chairman at Colenso BBDO.

In New Zealand, the kind of work Nick and his team were doing began to change…they floated a fully working pub around the world to thirsty Kiwis in London for Speights, built a tree house restaurant for Yellow Pages, launched a Yellow-flavoured chocolate bar that outsold Snickers, created a real Dogfight over the Auckland Harbour for Spielberg’s The Pacific, created the world’s first Impulse Savings product for Westpac, used anti-terrorism software to create the first human to canine pairing software for Pedigree’s Dog Adoption Drive, and continued to pick up the odd award in the process.

REGAN GRAFTON/ Executive Creative Director, FCB New Zealand

Regan currently works as the Executive Creative Director at FCB New Zealand. Previously, he worked for DDB New Zealand for 9 years, 4 of those as Deputy CD and CD on the Lion Nathan and NZ Lotteries accounts. Regan has been instrumental in many agency successes, including winning Campaign Brief Creative Agency for DDB and most recently FCB’s first Campaign Brief Creative Agency of the year title

On a personal level, Regan has been behind winning Golds, silvers and bronzes at Cannes, along with international metal and Grand Prix from other shows like D&AD, One Show, Clio, Andys, London international, NY festival, Australian Award, Spikes, Webbys, Caples, and the NZ Axis Awards.

ROBERT GALLUZZO/ Executive Producer/ Foundation, FINCH

Following his role as Head of TV at Y&R Sydney and then leading the Australian arm of international production company @radical.media, Rob Galluzzo started FINCH – a nimble, independent production company focused on the craft
of storytelling, entertainment and technology. The broad scope of Galluzzo’s production skills has been recognised internationally, winning gold in multiple categories, including innovation, film, experiental and craft. These include Cannes Gold Lions, Yellow Pencils and most recently, the coveted Black Pencil, while FINCH has been awarded production company of the year two years running. His entertainment work has been recognised at the International Digital Emmys and the AFIs.
